New report on AMR from UNEP

United Nations Environment Programme has recently issued a report on Bracing for Superbugs: Strengthening environmental action in the One Health response to antimicrobial resistance.

The focus of the report is on prevention as the core of the action against developing resistance, highlighting the relevance of the environment. The authors indicate several pollution sources that have impact on AMR: i.a., poor sanitation, community and municipal wastes; pharmaceutical manufacturing, intensive crop and animal production sectors – which thus need to be addressed in the strategies. The report itself proposes a number of solutions to prevent and reduce this type of pollutions.

As stressed in the publication, “Implementing comprehensive and coordinated strengthening of environmental action in the ‘One Health’ response to AMR will not only help reduce the risk and burden of AMR on societies but will also help address the triple planetary crisis”.
